September home care checklist — Kick off your spring clean | Mitre 10
September checklist Spring home refresh

Kick off your spring clean

The big one. Get stuck in and you're sorted for a full year.

5 tasks 3–4 hours Spring

Spring is here and it's time to roll up your sleeves and get stuck into the deep clean. The good news? Once you're done, your house will look fantastic and it'll be a full 12 months before you have to go that hard again.

Your September checklist

Wash the windows, both inside and out

The end of winter is the best time to wash the outside of your windows, since the weather is usually a little bit better and there'll be less dirt and grime build up across the warmer months. Give the insides a clean too, especially for windows that are opened and closed a lot (and subsequently covered in finger prints) as well as the laundry, bathroom and kitchen.

Clean your carpets and upholstery

Fabrics can hide all sorts of dust and dirt and a regular clean is essential. It's a much easier task when you have the right equipment to get it done properly, but you don't necessarily have to purchase it.

Declutter your cupboards and drawers

Every house has that one cupboard you have to approach carefully to avoid an avalanche of tupperware. Clearing out, cleaning down, and reorganising your cupboards and drawers is a great way to make your house a bit more functional and keep everything in its place. Nothing beats the freedom of haphazardly throwing open any cupboard door you like.

Clean your blinds, curtains and fans

With their proximity to moving air, blinds, curtains and fans are all prone to getting dusty. Give them a thorough clean, they won't just look nicer but they'll also contribute to a healthier home.

Deep clean any other space that needs it

You know your place better than we do. If you have rooms or areas that are a bit sad, a bit heavily used, or just requiring a bit of attention, it's a good idea to jump on that while you're in deep clean mode.

Tips for your home situation

Whether you're renting or settling into your first home, these simple tips can help you get more from this month's checklist.

Renting?

A thorough spring clean is a great opportunity to document the state of your rental. Take photos of clean, well-maintained areas for your records alongside any existing wear and tear.

First home owner?

Spring is the ideal time to book a gutter clean and inspect your roof, downpipes and exterior walls for any damage or wear from winter. Catching issues early saves money and stress later.
