Five jobs to keep your home warm, cosy and clutter-free.
July is your mid-winter reset. As it gets colder and we spend more time indoors, it's a great time to tackle some key spaces to stay warm and cosy without having to face clutter and grime.
Give the water tank a good scrub, wipe down the exterior and the vents. If possible, brush any dust or debris off the coils but be gentle as they can bend. It's also a good time to remove the filter. Some are washable, some you can vacuum with a brush attachment, but if it's looking really bad you should consider replacing it. Refer to your product manual for best advice on cleaning your dehumidifier.
Condensation build-up, finger prints and cooking grease all find their way onto your windows over winter. A good glass cleaner and a microfibre cloth will sort most of it. Pay special attention to windows in the kitchen, bathroom and any rooms that get a lot of use. They tend to cop the worst of it.
Baked-on grease and food residue often needs a proper oven cleaner and a bit of soaking time to shift. Make sure you have rubber gloves and good ventilation before you start. For removable oven racks, mix baking soda with cleaning vinegar to create a paste, apply it to the racks and let it sit for 15 to 20 minutes before rinsing and drying. Stovetop burners and drip trays are often the worst offenders, so give them a proper clean too.
Work room by room and be decisive. Anything you haven't used or worn in the past year is worth donating, selling or tossing. Once the clutter is cleared, vacuum thoroughly including under furniture and along the skirting boards.
Cushions, throws and rugs hold onto dust, pet hair and odours more than most things in your home. Check care labels first. Most throws can go straight in the washing machine. Cushion covers can usually be removed and washed separately. For rugs, a thorough vacuum on both sides is the minimum. A fabric cleaner spray can tackle any spots or lingering smells.
