August home care checklist — Get ready for spring | Mitre 10
August checklist Pre-spring clean

Get ready for spring

Set the stage now so the big spring clean is a breeze.

5 tasks 3–4 hours Pre-spring clean

August is all about the pre-spring clean. Not quite a spring clean, but setting the stage for one. By tackling a few key jobs now, you'll make things easier when that big, springtime deep clean rolls around.

Your August checklist

Clean-out your wardrobe

Dive into the wardrobe and get it sorted. This might include rearranging your clothing to have your go-tos in the easiest to access spot, gathering up things you don't wear anymore to sell or donate, getting rid of any dust that's accumulated, or just having a general sort. As a bonus, you might get the opportunity to reunite a pair of estranged socks.

Dust and spot clean your walls

Walls collect more dust and grime than you'd think, especially around light switches, door frames and high-traffic areas. A slightly damp microfibre cloth handles most marks. For anything stubborn, a small amount of sugar soap on the cloth will usually do it. Test on a hidden area first.

Clean the shower

Soap scum and mildew build up faster in winter when bathrooms don't air out as easily. Give the tiles, grout, shower screen and fittings a proper clean. A dedicated bathroom spray and a stiff-bristled brush makes light work of grout lines.

Check your bathroom ventilation

A bathroom fan that's not pulling air properly makes every other cleaning job harder. Condensation lingers and mould follows. Check the vent cover isn't blocked with dust and the fan is running. If it's underperforming, now is the time to replace it before the warmer months.

Get prepped for spring cleaning

Use the last few days of August to set yourself up for September. Check your cleaning supplies, make note of anything that needs restocking and identify the bigger jobs you want to tackle in the spring clean. Going in with a plan makes a real difference.

A quick stock check now saves you mid-clean trips to the shop.
