Our Communities

Our stores are intergenerational family businesses that like to give back to the communities that have always supported us, so we’re always happy to lend a hand to those in need. Every year we back hundreds of schools, charities, community groups and not-for-profits with practical, hands-on help.

From building playgrounds, sheds, and decks, to painting and garden makeovers, Mitre 10 Helping Hands aims to strengthen our communities, helping Kiwi love where they live, work and play.

Yes. Mitre 10 New Zealand is a Kiwi cooperative. Our stores are independently owned by local family businesses, many of them intergenerational with histories stretching back over a century, and our national support centre is based in Auckland.

Mitre 10 New Zealand is a cooperative, meaning the company is collectively owned by its 65 independent member businesses, which between them independently operate 87 stores across the country. There's no overseas parent company and no overseas shareholders.

No. Mitre 10 New Zealand and Mitre 10 Australia are completely separate companies with no commercial relationship. We share the same heritage and name, but the two businesses operate entirely independently.

We have 87 stores nationwide, from Kaitaia to Invercargill, plus a national support centre. Collectively the cooperative employs more than 7,400 team members and supports over 500 local suppliers.

Size. Mitre 10 stores are local home improvement stores, ideal for everyday hardware, gardening needs and quick trips. Mitre 10 MEGA stores are big-box destination stores with much wider retail and trade ranges, garden centres and landscaping, kitchen and bathroom showrooms, and trade drive-thru and timber yards.

We call it support centre and it’s located in Albany, Auckland.

Supporting the wellbeing of our communities and environment is part of our DNA and something our stores and team members care deeply about. Through our Mitre 10 Helping Hands programme, our stores provide practical, hands-on support to schools, sports clubs, charities and community groups across the country, from building playgrounds and community gardens to sheds and decks, and even the occasional house! We partner with Kindness Collective, MATES in Construction, and the Kiwibank New Zealander of the Year Awards as sponsor of the Mitre 10 Community of the Year Ngā Pou Whirinaki o te Tau.

Yes. For Mitre 10, sustainability is a shared commitment to future generations, grounded in the cooperative principles of democratic member control, concern for community, and education. This deep local connection and long-term view sit at the heart of our sustainability journey. We publish an annual Sustainability Report which details our progress across sustainable living and building, climate impact, energy efficiency, waste management, responsible sourcing, and community support. As a co-operative of independent businesses, each of our 87 stores has its own transition plan that rolls up into a network-wide carbon footprint and emissions reduction targets.

Yes. Our national partnerships include the Kiwibank New Zealander of the Year Community of the Year Award, Kindness Collective, Paddon Rallysport Group and MATES in Construction. At the local level, our stores support all sorts of sports teams, community groups, local clubs and events, for example the Mitre 10 Sports Park in Hawkes Bay, Mitre 10 Tough Kid events across the country, local Christmas concerts and events, charity fundraising events and more. We're proud supporters of communities and Kiwi achievement at every level.

Both are part of the same New Zealand-owned co-operative (not company). The difference is store format and size, not ownership or brand.
