A wood fire and its flue work as a matched system, and the flue determines how well the fire draws, how clean it burns and how safe it is to run. Flue kits include the inner flue pipe, insulated outer casing, roof flashing and rain cap. Flue length, angles and clearance from combustible materials are all set by the manufacturer and the Building Code. Installation requires a certified installer and a building consent.
No. All wood fire installations in New Zealand, including the flue, require a building consent and must be installed by a certified wood fire installer. The flue must meet manufacturer specifications, Building Code requirements and clearances to combustible materials. An incorrect flue installation creates serious fire and smoke risks, and will invalidate the fire's warranty.
Standard flue kits include 3.6m of flue pipe, which suits most single-storey homes. The flue must extend at least 1m above the roof penetration point, and higher if the flue passes within 3m of a ridge or higher structure. Additional lengths can be added where the roof pitch or nearby buildings require a taller flue. Your installer will confirm the final height during consent.
