Fire starters help you light a wood fire or outdoor brazier quickly and cleanly, without relying on newspaper and kindling alone. Natural wax-coated wood wool, compressed wood blocks and gel starters all work with dry kindling to get flames going fast. Good fire starters reduce smoke during the critical first ten minutes, which protects air quality and helps your flue run cleaner.
Use the top-down method: stack larger split logs on the bottom, smaller kindling above them, and place one or two fire starters and a handful of fine kindling on top. Light the starters and let the fire burn down into the larger wood. This method produces less smoke than lighting from the bottom and gets the flue drawing quickly.
Wax-coated wood wool and compressed wood block starters are safe when used as directed. Place one or two starters under your kindling, light and step back. Never use petrol, methylated spirits or other liquid accelerants, which can flash up dangerously. Store fire starters in a dry cupboard away from the fire itself and out of reach of children.
