Two wins for Mitre 10 MEGA Hamilton at local business awards

The Mitre 10 MEGA Hamilton team had double the reason to celebrate after this year’s Westpac Waikato Business Awards, with two team members recognised.

Clifford Buchler was named CEO of the Year, while Jessica Fearnley, People, Culture and Business Improvement Manager, was highly commended in the Emerging Leader of the Year category. Mitre 10 MEGA Hamilton operates two stores, Mitre 10 MEGA Te Rapa and Mitre 10 Ruakura.

Mitre 10 MEGA Hamilton owner Terry Wilson says he and wife Lynne weren’t surprised by either award.

“We are absolutely over the moon to see them both recognised in such a way. It was genuine recognition of Clifford’s team’s respect for him that led to the photo of the team holding his award in his absence. While Clifford has only been with us for two years, he’s made his mark in the time,” said Terry.

Judges of the CEO of the Year category said of Clifford:

“Clifford’s leadership saw significant growth of two stores in 18 months, increasing performance by 20 times the average, and 14 times the average; and winning Ruakura the title of NZ Mitre 10 MEGA Store of the Year for 2019 as well. He has built a customer-focused and people-driven culture, through understanding and respecting the rights and strengths of individuals in his teams.  He leads by example and continually challenges himself to be better. An outstanding leader.”

Jessica has been with Mitre 10 MEGA Hamilton for nearly 13 years and has continued to grow her career within the business. Terry says he’s proud of Jessica and what she has achieved to date in her career.

“Jessica was one of our very first team members in early 2007. We have watched her grow from HR Assistant and Payroll Clerk at Te Rapa, through a number of senior positions until today she holds the title of ‘people, culture, and business improvement manager’ for our expanded business,” says Terry.

“I am blown away to receive this award, it came as a surprise especially given the strong competition. Thank you to my HR team for their support, Terry and Lynne for taking a chance on me and supporting me, and Clifford for guiding and mentoring but also allowing me to be the leader I want to be. Congratulations to Kingsley and all the finalists and winners. Lastly thank you to the Waikato Chamber, it has been a fabulous process to be a part of,” says Jessica.

Mitre 10 prides itself on developing careers across all areas of the business, offering a range of learning and development programmes to team members at all levels.
