Levelling up the playing field

After spending many years building better community spaces across New Zealand, we launched Project Playground to help address the ongoing need for safe and engaging play spaces in schools around the country. Play is vital to children’s physical, social and cognitive development and builds stronger, more resilient Kiwi kids. The problem? Playgrounds are expensive, and fundraising is hard. We saw an opportunity to help.

Since kicking off Project Playground in 2021, we’ve built some epic playgrounds for deserving schools, plus we’ve offered up Gift Cards to help others on their way. We work with leading design and installation company Playground People to ensure that playgrounds cater to all students, from the youngest tamariki to the oldest, with the aim of keeping children engaged in active play throughout their primary school years.

Since then, Project Playground has evolved. As much as we love the excitement of a brand-new full playground build, there were plenty of opportunities to make a big difference with smaller projects. While originally a nationally led project, many individual Mitre 10 stores are bringing Project Playground into their communities, completing projects of all shapes and sizes in their own neighbourhoods.
