How to change a gate hinge
If the hinges on your gate are rusted, seized… or just plain ugly – don’t worry, they’re pretty easy to change.
Depending on where your hinges are situated on your gate will determine as to how you go about changing them out.
If you have hinges that are sitting flat on the outside of the gate then all you need to do is remove one hinge at a time.
Before you start it's best if you place some packing under the gate to support it while removing the hinge.
You may also need to cut a wedge to go under the gate also to push the gate up to its original position.
When your hinge is removed it’s a good idea to paint any exposed timber that may be under the hinge.
Make sure the new hinge you’ve chosen is able to support the weight of your gate.
It’s also a good idea to choose a slightly bigger hinge as the screw holes will be in a different location from the old holes, meaning they’ll fix into the timber nicely.
If you do need to use the same size hinge, and the old holes are flogged out, then simply insert a couple of fillets of timber into the old holes to pack them.
Fix your new hinge in place, making sure that your gate is sitting square and level.
