How to change a door handle
Door handles are essential in any home. You can’t do without them so make sure you consider them as part of your overall room look.
Start by checking what size handles you need. Use a ruler to measure the ‘backset’ of your door and the size of the hole in your door – backset is the distance from the edge of the door to the center of the door lock. It is generally 60mm but some doors have a 75mm backset.
Remove the screws from both sides of your door handle. If you can’t see any screws holding the handles together they are probably hidden by a cover plate. If your handles have a cover plate just flick off the cover using a flat-head screwdriver.
Once all the screws are removed pull out the old handles.
Then take out the screws off the faceplate in the edge of the door. The faceplate links to the cylinder of the handle which controls the handle lever or latch.
You should now be able to pull out the handle cylinder. If the plate is hard to remove by hand, use a flat-head screwdriver under the edge of the plate and apply gentle pressure to pry out the cylinder.
Next, insert the new cylinder and screw in to place. Make sure the faceplate is secure and screws are flush or else they’ll prevent the door from closing properly.
You can now insert your new handles. Align the front and back handles and slot together through the cylinder. Screw securely in place.
