A retaining wall can be so much more than just a practical insertion to a garden. There are so many options in terms of materials to make your retaining wall a bit more personal whilst adding to your landscape.
The classic use of railway sleepers will always add a great, rustic element to your garden but why not try rusted sheet metal for that patina look that will continue to change over time, or for a more modern look try a poured concrete option or concrete block for a modernist approach.
Mesh cages filled with large rocks are also a different, fantastic look. Think outside the square and look at your garden holistically instead of practically.
Building a retaining wall is a great DIY job. It can be hard work, but it’s a good, simple, satisfying job that if done properly will look good and stay strong for decades.
