Step by step guide

Step 1: Picking the right trailer for you

When thinking of a trailer, most people typically imagine a standard low-side trailer. You can transport a wide range of items with these, green waste, construction debris, small to medium size furniture, you name it. Generally speaking, a single axle trailer is just fine for domestic use.

In addition to matching up a trailer to the job at hand, there are also a few other things to consider to choose the best option. These include:

  1. Figuring out how much your vehicle can tow
Check your vehicle's handbook for the following:
    1. The maximum weight of laden trailer, without brakes, that can be towed by the motor vehicle.
    2. The maximum weight of laden trailer, with brakes, that can be towed by the motor vehicle.
  2. Your budget
If you’re on a tight budget, our range of trailers offers budget friendly solutions that doesn’t compromise on quality.

Step 2: Preparing your trailer for the road

Now that you’ve chosen your trailer it’s time to get it road ready.

  1. Assembly
Our Jobmate trailers are fully assembled for use prior to sale. Occasionally you may have to wait a short time for assembly to occur, speak to our team in your local store to confirm this.
  2. Sorting out Warrant of Fitness (WOF) & registration
Our trailers do not come with number plates, registration, or a WoF. You will need to arrange this yourself and it will be an extra expense. Our store team members will be able to provide guidance on the necessary steps required to get your trailer road ready on purchase. This will involve going to a New Zealand Transport Registration Agent to register and obtain number plates then taking the trailer to a WoF Agent. Mitre 10 is happy to watch over your new trailer while you go off to arrange your registration and will help you attach the number plates. It is recommended to allow at least 2 hours from time of purchase to sort it all out. Wait times will vary at agents depending on day, time, and region. Some regions may also not have agents open on weekends. Mitre 10’s warranty ensures that our trailers will pass a WOF in new condition. This will cost approx. $180 depending on where you go.

Step 3: Post purchase care

  1. Warranty info
All Jobmate trailers come with a 1-year domestic warranty from date of sale.
  2. WoF frequency
When you get your trailer its first Warrant of Fitness, it will be issued for three years. Subsequent WoF’s will be required every year.
  3. Servicing your trailer
It is recommended to check your bearings every year and this can be done when obtaining a WOF. Bearings, depending on the type of usage, may need replacing more frequently. We recommend that this be done by a professional mechanic.
  4. Trailer maintainance
Trailer surfaces are galvanised and certain abrasive materials can cause wear and tear to the coating. Deep scratches may expose the bare metal, and if this happens, we recommend using a galvanised spray paint to touch up the scratches and prevent rust.
  5. Spare parts
Mitre10 has a comprehensive Spare Parts Programme that backs up the Jobmate trailers in the event of missing or damaged parts found during the assembly process.
