Summer crops for Marton community garden

Date: November 2019

Helping Hand: Mitre 10 Marton

Project: Plant Marton Community Garden for summer

Marton Community Garden is a valuable resource for the town’s residents. It provides free fresh food for those who need it and helps the locals feel part of the community. Anyone can gather food from the garden, without obligation, and anyone who wants to can work in it. With up to a dozen groups a day going through the gardens, it’s a great place to meet people and connect with the community.

On a sunny November day, volunteers from the Mitre 10 Marton team pitched in and gave the community a helping hand to establish a summer crop for all to enjoy. The team planted around 120 vegetable seedlings, all donated by Zealandia, and filled the garden beds with organic fertiliser and seed raising mix donated by Tui.

The project came about after store manager Terry Ellery heard of several families using the garden and asked how Mitre 10 could help. He said: “It was a privilege for my team and I to give our time and pass on the wonderful support, in the form of plants and products, from our two generous suppliers, to those in need in our community.”
