Measure the usable width and depth, allow room for doors and chairs to open and check that larger pieces can fit through your doorway, hallway or side gate.

Build your outdoor space one layer at a time

Buying tip

Start with the piece you will use most and give it room to work. It is easier to add a rug, lighting and pots later than to rearrange around furniture that does not quite fit.

Grow in small spaces

Grow a vege garden in a small space

You do not need a large garden to grow herbs, salad greens and compact vegetables. Pots, troughs, grow bags and raised planters can turn a sunny balcony, courtyard or deck into a productive growing spot.

Before you plant
  • Choose plants to suit the sunlight your space receives.
  • Use trellis and plant supports to make the most of vertical space.
  • Place containers where they are easy to reach, water and harvest.
  • For balconies, check property rules and weight limits before adding large or heavy planters.
Plan before you buy

Measure your space, then check the fit

Product measurements can be shown in different ways. Some outdoor settings list the size of each chair, table or stool rather than the full space the complete setting needs. Measure your available area, check the dimensions supplied in the product details, then map out how each piece could fit.

  1. 1 Measure the usable areaMeasure the width and depth at the narrowest points. Exclude any space taken up by steps, heat pump units, planters or other fixed features.
  2. 2 Find the product measurementsLook in the Product details section for width, depth, height or diameter. For furniture settings, measurements may be listed separately for each chair, table or stool.
  3. 3 Mark out the complete layoutUse masking tape or chalk to mark the width and depth of each piece in the position you plan to use it. This gives you a better idea of the complete footprint than looking at each measurement separately.
  4. 4 Allow room to use itLeave enough room to pull out chairs, recline seating, open doors and move comfortably around the furniture. Product dimensions usually describe the furniture itself, not the extra space needed to use it.
  5. 5 Check access and conditionsMeasure gates, doorways, hallways, lifts and stairs so boxed or assembled furniture can reach the space. Also consider sun, wind, rain and drainage before deciding where everything will go.

How to read product measurements

Width and depth help you understand how much floor space each piece will take up. Height is useful when placing furniture beneath windows, railings or covered areas.

Product dimensions Space to allow for use and movement

Depth

Width

What to look forWhat it means
Width or WThe measurement from side to side
Depth or DThe measurement from front to back
Height or HThe measurement from the bottom to the highest point
Diameter or DiaThe widest measurement across a round item
Individual piece measurementsThe dimensions of each chair, table, stool or other item in a setting
Folded dimensionsThe space a foldable item needs when stored, if supplied

Not every product page includes every measurement. If a measurement you need is not shown, check the product in store or contact your local store before buying.

Frequently asked questions

Look for furniture with a compact footprint and features that make the area easier to use. Foldable tables, stackable chairs, modular seating and furniture with built in storage can all be useful options.

Compare the product width and depth with the usable area you measured. Remember to allow room for doors, walkways and chairs that need to pull out.

Trellis, decorative screens, narrow planters and climbing plants can add privacy while making use of vertical space. Check fixing requirements and property rules before installing anything permanent.

Rules differ between buildings and products. Check your landlord or body corporate rules and follow the product instructions. Charcoal BBQs should not be used on apartment balconies, decks, beneath roof overhangs or in enclosed areas.

Herbs, salad greens, compact vegetables and many flowers can grow well in containers. Choose plants that suit the sunlight, wind and room available.
