Soot removers and chimney cleaners help reduce creosote build-up inside your wood fire flue, extending the time between professional sweeps and improving draw. Chemical soot removers break down dried creosote when burned with your regular fuel, while glass cleaners lift smoke stains from the firebox door. Always use products as directed and continue scheduling an annual professional flue sweep.
Chemical soot removers help dry and loosen creosote inside the flue so more of it falls away during use, which reduces build-up between sweeps. They do not replace a mechanical flue brush sweep. Use a soot remover every few weeks through winter as directed, and book a professional sweep at least once a year to physically clear the flue.
The NZ Home Heating Association recommends a professional flue sweep at least once a year, ideally before winter starts. If you burn regularly or use wet wood, you may need a second sweep mid-winter. Signs that a sweep is overdue include poor draw, smoke leaking into the room, dark staining on the flue and a musty smell from the firebox.
