Firewood at Mitre 10

Dry, seasoned firewood is the foundation of an efficient wood fire. Well-dried firewood (under 20 percent moisture content) produces more heat, less smoke and fewer flue deposits than wet or green wood. Mitre 10 stocks a range of split firewood suitable for home fires, from softwood for kindling to hardwood for long overnight burns. Order early and store the wood under cover with airflow around each piece.

How do I know if firewood is dry enough to burn?

Properly seasoned firewood has a moisture content below 20 percent. Dry wood feels lighter than green wood, shows end cracks and makes a sharp crack rather than a dull thud when two pieces are knocked together. A moisture meter (around $30 to $50) gives an accurate reading. Burning wet wood wastes energy and builds creosote in your flue.

How should I store firewood?

Stack firewood off the ground on pallets or timber rails, with space between each row for airflow. Cover the top with a tarp or woodshed roof to shed rain, but leave the sides open so wind can dry the wood. A north-facing location in full sun dries wood fastest. Order firewood six to twelve months before you plan to burn it for best results.
