Gas heaters deliver fast, strong heat for living areas, workshops and outdoor spaces. Indoor LPG cabinet heaters and flued gas fires warm larger rooms quickly and continue running during power outages. Compare heat output in megajoules per hour, flame setting options, safety features like oxygen depletion sensors and whether the model is flued or unflued. Unflued indoor gas heaters require good ventilation.
Yes. Unflued gas heaters (including LPG cabinet heaters) release water vapour and combustion gases into the room, so they need an open window or a clear air gap of around 5,000mm² for ventilation. Never use an unflued gas heater in a bedroom, bathroom or caravan. Flued gas fires vent combustion gases outside, making them safer for continuous indoor use.
Yes. The NZ Home Heating Association recommends servicing flued gas heaters annually, ideally before winter. A registered gas fitter checks the burner, flue, seals and safety cut-offs. Portable LPG cabinet heaters do not need routine servicing, but check the hose, regulator and O-ring seals each season and replace the hose and regulator every 10 years.
