Convection heaters draw cool air over a heating element, warm it and let the heated air rise and circulate through the room. They suit medium to large rooms where you want steady background heat. Many include a built-in fan for faster warm-up. Compare wattage, number of heat settings, thermostat, timer and safety features like tip-over and overheat protection.
Convection heaters deliver more even heat across a larger room and run quieter than fan heaters, making them better for living rooms and bedrooms. Fan heaters warm a small space faster but create airflow and noise, so they suit bathrooms, garages and quick spot heating. A convection heater with a fan option gives you the best of both.
Place a convection heater on the floor against the coldest wall of the room, which is usually an external wall with windows. Warm air rises from the heater, sets up a circulation loop and evens out the room temperature. Keep it at least 1m clear of curtains and furniture, and never cover the heater or use it to dry clothes.
