Column heaters deliver quiet, even background heat, which makes them a popular choice for bedrooms and living rooms. Oil-filled models hold heat in sealed columns and release it steadily, while oil-free versions heat up faster and are lighter to move. Compare wattage, number of heat settings, thermostat accuracy, timer and whether the model includes a fan for quicker warm-up.
Column heaters use the same power as any other 2kW plug-in heater when running at full output. Because they retain heat once switched off and cycle on a thermostat, they often use less power than fan heaters over an evening. Using a timer, closing doors, drawing curtains and adding a draught stopper all reduce running costs further.
Most column heaters are designed for extended use and include safety features like tip-over switches, overheat protection and a timer. Set the thermostat to a low temperature (around 16°C to 18°C for bedrooms), keep the heater clear of bedding and curtains by at least 1m, and replace any heater that feels hot to the touch around the controls or shows any damage to the cord.
