Air Conditioners

Air Conditioners at Mitre 10

Keep your home or workspace comfortable through warm New Zealand summers with our range of air conditioners. Portable and split-system options suit everything from a single bedroom to an open-plan living area. Choose by room size, cooling capacity in kilowatts and energy rating, and look for features like sleep mode, timers and washable filters.

What size air conditioner do I need for my room?

As a rule of thumb, allow around 0.15kW of cooling capacity for every square metre of well-insulated floor area. A 20m² bedroom needs roughly a 2.5kW unit, while a 40m² open-plan living space suits a 5kW to 6kW model.

Factor in ceiling height, window size, sun exposure and insulation level, then size up slightly for west-facing rooms or homes with high ceilings.

What is the difference between a portable and split-system air conditioner?

Portable air conditioners sit on the floor and vent hot air through a window hose, so you can move them between rooms without installation.

Split systems have an indoor unit connected to an outdoor compressor by refrigerant pipes, and deliver quieter, more efficient cooling for a fixed space. Split systems need professional installation, while portables plug straight into a standard power point.
