Mitre 10 names top stores and suppliers nationwide
The top Mitre 10 and Mitre 10 MEGA stores have been named, with the winners proudly representing communities big and small across New Zealand, from Winton, Wanaka and Westport to Taupo, Nelson and the Waikato’s Ruakura.
Mitre 10 Acting CEO Matthew Washington says the awards are an opportunity to celebrate excellence across the retail cooperative’s 83 locally owned stores, as well as suppliers and team members. The awards were held at Spark Arena on 8 August.
“It’s a fantastic evening where our stores from across the country come together to celebrate each other, their teams, and our incredible suppliers. Our local stores are very competitive with each other, wanting to be the best they can be for their teams and communities, and these awards recognise that drive for excellence,” says Washington.
The awards acknowledge both Mitre 10 and Mitre 10 MEGA stores within three categories: Retail Store of the Year, Trade Store of the Year, and Garden Centre of the Year. Judges assess a broad range of criteria including customer and supplier feedback, operational standards, store presentation, staff performance and financial performance. Suppliers and team members are also recognised in the awards, including an award for supplier innovation.
Multi-year-award-winning Mitre 10 Mega stores Taupo and Nelson, and Mitre 10 stores Wanaka and Westport, were accompanied by first time winners Mitre 10 Winton and Mitre 10 MEGA Ruakura that took out the coveted Store of the Year awards. Judges said there were only a point or two difference amongst the category finalists, a testament to the strength of store performance across the network.
Across the larger format Mitre 10 MEGA stores, Mitre 10 MEGA Taupo achieved a hat-trick, taking home the Garden Centre of the Year Award for the third year running. Mitre 10 MEGA Nelson has achieved similar success, winning back-to-back Trade store of the Year awards, coupled with success in the garden centre category in recent years.
Mitre 10 Wanaka has been a consistent top trade performer, having won the Trade Store of the Year Award five times in the past decade. After winning Store of the Year in 2018, this year Mitre 10 Westport won the Garden Centre of the Year Award for the first time following an expansion two years ago.
As well as taking out Mitre 10 MEGA Trade Store of the Year, Mitre 10 MEGA Nelson CEO Brandon Beveridge received special recognition, winning the CEO Achievement Award. The Award recognises a team member that exemplifies the Mitre 10 culture and values, and who has performed ‘above and beyond’ during the year for the wider Mitre 10 brand.
“Brandon is an exceptional retailer and truly deserving of this accolade. He’s innovative, a big picture thinker, a meticulous planner, he surrounds himself with a high achieving team and creates a winning team culture that strives for excellence and is always focussed on putting the customer first. He’s always willing to share his knowledge and advice, and we’re proud to have him as part of the Mitre 10 family,” says Washington.
Kiwi success story, Goodnature, won the Mitre 10 Innovation Award for its A24 rat and stoat trap that offers a unique pest control solution.
“We’re stoked to have won in the Innovation Category at Mitre 10’s Annual Awards night. We’re really proud of our A24 trap, that's designed and manufactured here at home and is unique globally. To be recognised by one of New Zealand's largest retailers is an awesome win for us. It's strong support for our technology that's used across Aotearoa, and the rest of the world, to protect native species," says Good Nature co-founder Robbie van Dam.
The supplier awards recognise Supplier of the Year winners across three different categories - Hardware and Garden, Renovation and Décor, Building Products – as well as an Innovation Award. They celebrate outstanding suppliers that have partnered with Mitre 10 to deliver for stores in a number of areas including above average sales performance, enabling a competitive advantage, or providing exceptional store support.
“The bottom line is a retailer can’t succeed without the support of an incredibly dedicated, passionate and high performing supplier community. At Mitre 10 we truly value the partnerships we have formed over the years that truly result in mutual success, and these awards are a way that we can recognise that,” says Washington.
Mitre 10 is New Zealand’s largest home improvement and garden retailer and continues to expand its stores and locations across the country.
