Good Bitches Baking and Yates Team Up to Reward Volunteers

25 June 2020

Volunteer bakers around the country received a thoughtful surprise in their letterboxes this week. With help from Mitre 10, Good Bitches Baking (GBB) teamed up with Yates to recognise and reward their volunteers for NZ Volunteer Week (21-27 June) with a gift of Yates seeds.

GBB approached Mitre 10 with the idea of gifting seeds to their 2,400 bakers, so we spoke to our friends at Yates to see if they could help spread a little kindness. Incredibly, Yates offered to donate a massive 4,800 packets of seeds to thank GBB’s bakers for the contribution they make to their communities.

Named Mitre 10 Community of the Year at the 2020 New Zealander of the Year Awards, GBB is a network of volunteers who bake, deliver and coordinate sweet treats for those who need a little kindness: families with children in hospital; food banks and soup kitchens; hospice residents and loved ones; women and children fleeing domestic violence; and others.

“We jumped at the chance to help such a fabulous cause, as it aligned with our team’s values of supporting our wider communities too,” said David Mortimer, General Manager of Yates. “We think the simple act of sowing seeds can certainly lift spirits by connecting with nature and inspiring hope, especially in this case where each volunteer will receive two packets of flower seeds – one for them and one to give away to someone else, again to show kindness.”

Nic Murray, Co-Founder of Good Bitches Baking, said Volunteer Week was a great opportunity to recognise the contribution GBB bakers make to their communities.

"Our volunteers put their hearts into creating small moments of sweetness for people they will likely never meet. Being able to plant and share these seeds of kindness from Yates and Mitre 10 will create more lovely moments – of colour and joy – for volunteers, and their friends and whanau over the coming year. What a lovely way to celebrate."

We reckon GBB and Yates are doing a great job of that and we’re proud to be associated with them.
