Project: Completing the makeover of an outdoor space at the school
Westport South School had been working towards completing a new outdoor space for quite some time when the team at Mitre 10 West port got involved. While the school has a freshly installed playground, their outdoor seating was a bit tired and the worn shade sails that sheltered in were badly in need of an update.
When the school approached the team at Westport for help, co-owner and operator Troy Scanlon was more than happy to once again roll up his sleeves and get stuck in to a project to benefit the local youth. Troy says his sponsorship plan is simple: “We want Westport to be a great place to live, so we support schools, community groups, sports teams and organisations to help make Westport that special place.”
The Westport team got involved with this project when it kicked off back in 2025, managing every aspect from start to finish. The shelter structure was built just before Christmas with materials supplied at cost. The sun filtering roof keeps the space nice and cool during summer without blocking any of the light. When February rolled around, Troy and his team made up of Mitre 10 staffers, local builders and community volunteers kicked back into gear to build a massive deck beneath the shelter complete with a wheelchair ramp and bordered by planter boxes.
The deck involved almost two kilometres of composite decking, with composite being specified as it requires little maintenance and will stand up well against the local weather, meaning the space will endure for many years (and generations of students) to come. The epic finished space is more than just a shaded spot to enjoy lunch. It’s suitable for the Westport South School’s 227 tamariki to play on, for lessons to be taught on and for school assemblies and performances to take place on.
“What the team from Mitre 10 Westport delivered for our school community was nothing short of extraordinary,” Principal Craig Adams said. “The impact of this space on teaching and learning at Westport South School is significant. Outdoor learning opportunities that were previously limited are now easily accessible for all classes. The space aligns beautifully with our school values, reflecting the positive attitude and generosity of the Westport community, the encouragement shown by local businesses and volunteers, and the spirit of working together to create something meaningful for our children.”
