Enclosing a Space for Learning, Growing and Giving back at Parua Bay School

Project: Building a fence around the Parua Bay School’s enviro space.

Parua Bay School has an enviro space where the tamariki can grow vegetables to develop their food forest and nurture native trees. It’s a fantastic sustainability initiative that won’t just benefit the environment and the students, but the larger community around them as well. The students are really building momentum with the space and excited to see it mature into a fully fledged garden to table programme.

The school reached out to the team at Mitre 10 MEGA Whangarei for some help with a particularly challenging aspect of the enviro space: protecting the space. Without clear boundaries, it was difficult to maintain the space and properly develop it.
Our Whangarei team didn’t need any convincing. The benefits to the space were immediately obvious, and the vision was one that resonated deeply with our people. Our next Helping Hand project was on.

Planning began in late 2025, with site visits, careful scoping, material sourcing, and a call to rally the troops so our team could hit the ground running with the build in the new year. After a busy festive season in-store, our legendary team members at Mitre 10 MEGA Whangarei swapped the shop floor for the school yard and got into some meaningful mahi in the community.
