Butane Canister 101

What is RVR and TSR?

Butane gas canisters are a great cost-effective, easy-to-use and lightweight option to power a stove or heating appliance while camping.

If used or stored incorrectly gas canisters can build up pressure and explode. The main two reasons for a gas canister explosion are:

  • Use of oversized pot or pan covering the cartridge compartment of gas cooker causing a build-up of pressure in the cartridge.
  • Direct and indirect exposure to a heat source.

For full details on how to safely use and store gas canisters, check out our article here.

We have added extra safety features to our range of canisters to help provide you with the best outcome if an over-pressure situation was to occur. These are Rim Vent Release (RVR) and Triple Seamed Rims (TSR).

Our Gasmate Power Fuelâ„¢ Iso-Butane Gas Cartridges contain both TSR and RVRâ„¢ twin over-pressure safety devices making them safer and more secure.

What is Rim Vent Release or RVRâ„¢?

RVRâ„¢ device is a safety device which will activate in an over-pressure situation. The RVRâ„¢ saftey device releases the gas from the top of the cartirdge if the inner pressure continues to rise to a hazardous level.

What is Triple Seamed Rim or TSR?

The top and body of the cartridge has a stronger seam than a normal cartridge allowing it to hold longer and tighter in an over-pressure situation. This helps the RVRâ„¢ (Rim Vent Release) safety device to activate in a controlled pressure release.
