Outdoor fires and braziers give you a real wood flame for backyard gatherings, long summer evenings and cool autumn nights. Options range from simple open-bowl braziers to enclosed fire pits, chimineas and pizza-oven combinations. Choose a steel, cast-iron or corten-steel build for durability, and consider whether you want a lid, grill plate or cooking surface. Check local council fire rules before lighting.
In most New Zealand council areas, you can use a small contained brazier or fire pit on your own property without a permit, provided there is no total fire ban in force. Restrictions tighten during summer fire seasons. Check your council and Fire and Emergency NZ (FENZ) for the current fire season status before lighting. Keep the fire at least 3m from buildings, fences and overhanging trees.
Burn dry, seasoned firewood only. Avoid treated, painted or driftwood, which release toxic gases and damage the brazier's finish. Softwoods like pine light easily for kindling, while hardwoods like manuka and gum burn longer for overnight atmosphere. Never use petrol or other accelerants to light the fire, and keep a bucket of water or hose nearby in case the fire spreads.
