Gas outdoor heaters deliver high heat output for patios, decks and outdoor entertaining areas where you want to keep guests warm on cool evenings. Tall mushroom-style patio heaters and pyramid flame heaters both run on a 9kg LPG bottle housed in the base. Compare heat output in megajoules per hour, coverage radius, safety features like tilt shut-off and piezo ignition, and whether the heater includes wheels for moving between spots.
A typical mushroom-style gas patio heater produces around 40 to 45 megajoules per hour, which warms an outdoor area roughly 3m across around the base. Pyramid flame heaters produce similar heat but with a visible flame effect through a glass tube. They work best in sheltered areas, because wind disperses the heat quickly.
On full heat (around 40 to 45 megajoules per hour), a 9kg LPG bottle typically lasts around 10 to 12 hours in a mushroom-style patio heater. Lowering the flame extends the run time to 15 to 20 hours. Keep a spare bottle on hand for longer events, and store any spare LPG bottle upright in a well-ventilated outdoor area.
