Electric outdoor heaters extend the usable hours of your patio, deck, alfresco area or covered outdoor room. Infrared and halogen heaters deliver fast, directional warmth without producing smoke or fumes, making them ideal for decks and restaurants. Compare heat output in watts, coverage area, IP rating for outdoor use, and whether the heater is wall-mounted, ceiling-mounted, freestanding or tabletop.
Electric infrared and halogen outdoor heaters warm people and surfaces directly with radiant heat, so you feel the warmth almost immediately. They work well in partially sheltered outdoor areas such as covered decks, verandas and alfresco zones, where the heat is contained. In fully open, windy spaces they struggle, because the heat disperses before it warms anyone.
A 2,000W outdoor electric heater costs around 60 to 80 cents per hour to run at average New Zealand electricity rates. Running a single heater for three hours over dinner costs roughly $2. Compare that with gas patio heaters, which produce more heat but cost slightly more per hour to run when LPG is bought in 9kg bottles.
