Bathroom heaters keep the room warm during winter showers and help dry the air once you step out. Options include wall-mounted fan heaters, heat lamp and fan combinations, and panel heaters rated for bathroom use. Look for an IP rating of at least IPX4 and an appropriate splash zone rating for where you plan to install the heater. All bathroom heaters must be installed by a registered electrician.
A three-in-one heat, light and exhaust fan unit is the most popular bathroom heater in New Zealand homes because it combines warmth, lighting and ventilation in one ceiling-mounted fitting. Wall-mounted ceramic or panel heaters also work well. Whatever style you choose, it must have an appropriate IP rating (IPX4 or higher) and be installed outside the shower splash zone.
Modern bathroom heaters are safe when installed correctly by a registered electrician. The correct IP rating prevents moisture entering the heater, and the zone spacing required under AS/NZS 3000 keeps the heater a safe distance from the shower or bath. Never use a portable plug-in heater in a bathroom unless it is specifically rated for bathroom use.
