Asparagus are true perennials and are almost everlasting in the garden with established beds, lasting at least twenty years and more.
Select a sunny permanent position and be sure all couch, grass, roots, and oxalis etc are completely removed. The bed should be raised 10-12cm above the surrounding garden to ensure good drainage. If available, work into the ground compost, stable or fowl manure, or a good dressing of blood and bone fertilizer.To plant the crowns, open up a 15 cm wide trench 7-8 cm deep and place crowns 45 cm apart with roots spread out in star fashion. The soil should then be replaced covering the crowns, and keep rows 60-80 cm apart. In the first year cut spears for 2 weeks only – then allow plants to go to fern. Each year the cutting period can be extended until plants have become fully established. Usually the cutting ceases in early December when plants are then allowed to run to fern. In Autumn remove all fern when it has completely yellowed off.

Orders under 25kg are $7.00 to Metro areas and $12.50 to Rural* areas.

Final shipping costs will be calculated and displayed at checkout. Alternatively the store may contact you to make other delivery arrangements.
If multiple items are ordered and are available within different timeframes, we may deliver the items separately. If this is the case you will not incur any extra delivery cost.
*For parcel orders, rural delivery addresses are as defined by New Zealand Post address data.

No Hassle Returns
We are happy to exchange or refund any unopened and unused, non-customised items returned to us in their original condition and packaging, including all accessories and the invoice or delivery docket, within 28 days. Customised products, which include products cut, made-to-measure, special order or mixed to specific requirements, cannot be refunded or exchanged.
It’s always easiest to return your product to the store you got it from, but you can return it to any Mitre 10 store. If you prefer to courier your product back to us, just check your invoice to see which store dispatched your order and that’s where you send it back to.
We will refund to your original payment method where possible or, if you prefer, we can issue you a Mitre 10 gift card for the sum equal to the cost of the product excluding handling and any delivery or returns costs.
Faulty Goods
If a problem occurs with a product purchased from Mitre 10 please contact us. We will arrange for it to be repaired or replaced, or provide a refund as specified by the Consumer Guarantees Act.
