The Government’s health and safety reforms are shifting the focus away from box-ticking and paperwork, towards managing the risks that matter most.
The aim is to cut red tape and ensure businesses prioritise critical risks over compliance rituals.
In high-risk industries like building and construction where workers experience some of the highest rates of injury and harm, that shift is especially important. More than one in 10 full-time construction workers made an ACC claim last year, highlighting the need for practical and effective safety measures.
Staying safe, and proving your commitment to health and safety also requires a lot of painful paperwork, especially when it comes to bidding for new contracts. Thankfully, a range of digital tools are helping to make it easier to keep safe and compliant on the worksite.
Here’s a quick look at some popular platforms:
SiteSmart
Developed by Site Safe, SiteSmart is a user-friendly health and safety management tool designed for small businesses. It helps manage risks, run digital inductions, and keeps all safety records in one place, aiming to create a culture where all workers get involved in site safety. This is a cost-effective solution focused on the building and construction sector. Site Safe also has a hands-on advisor network, providing you with guidance and support on health and safety related issues.
SiteWise
Also developed by Site Safe, SiteWise is an online prequalification system for the contractor market. Contractors receive a traffic light rating (from Red to Gold) and a score out of 100 based on a 14-step questionnaire around their health and safety practices, which is assessed by qualified practitioners. The results are posted to a database so main contractors and principals can see the business' performance at a glance, simplifying the tendering process. Results are valid for a year, reducing the need to provide evidence of compliance on a project-by-project basis.
HazardCo
HazardCo is a subscription-based health and safety app trusted by more than 10,000 tradies and main contractors in Australia and New Zealand to manage site inductions, report hazards, create site safety plans and complete safety documentation, all from a smartphone. HazardCo also has expert advice on hand.
ThinkSafe
ThinkSafe is a digital platform that includes a health and safety plan, risk register, incident reporting, and online training, along with AI capability that can convert paper forms into digital ones. Knowing tradies can be out and about in pretty remote areas, a key benefit of the app is that all features can be used offline, no internet connection needed.
These digital tools are a great help for construction professionals looking to better protect themselves, their teams and ultimately their families, helping everyone get home safely at the end of the day.
