MATES is a key industry organisation supporting mental health, particularly in the Construction sector. MATES builds and strengthens communities in the workplace and across the industry, building capability by helping people to support each other and enabling an environment that encourages positive wellbeing.

The impact of this community-based approach can then go beyond the workplace and become part of our everyday lives. MATES engages with people through on-site training and provide case management support when needed to those that need to connect to appropriate support.

MATES Fly the Flag

World Suicide Prevention Day takes place on September 10 each year and MATES use this day to celebrate their commitment to suicide prevention, as well as to spread awareness and encourage those struggling to reach out. During the second week of September every year, MATES Partners, Connectors and volunteers at sites across the country will fly the MATES flag, and you can too. Find out more

MATES Programme

MATES leverages industry participation and support to further embed suicide prevention and mental health awareness into our industry culture. The model delivers an integrated programme of community development and support, utilising training as a tool to raise awareness, reduce stigma and encourage help-seeking, help-offering and help-accepting behaviours. MATES Research

MATES in Construction NZ is an evidence-based workplace suicide prevention model, developed to reduce high suicide rates in the NZ Construction Industry.

We evaluate, test and research the work done ensuring shared learning efficiency. All programmes delivered by MATES in Construction are evaluated with feedback and analysis being incorporated into content as appropriate. Find out more
