There’s absolutely no question why the community of Westport loves their local Mitre 10. Top dog of Mitre 10 Westport Troy Scanlon has led the charge to support fundraising efforts to complete a playground upgrade at their fourth local school.
St Canice’s School is particularly close to his heart as his own former school, and his son’s current school. One of the coolest things about this project is that the playground makeover plan was actually led by students, kicking off in 2021 with a group of Year 6 students surveying their peers and mapping out their vision to breathe new life into their aging playspace.
Fast forward to 2025, and that vision has been brought to life after local legend Sean Casey kicked the project off in January, preparing for the build by sorting out the drainage, fencing and retaining walls. The project was completed over four days in March with Stan taking the foreman position, and a group of over 100 local volunteers rolling up their sleeves and doing the mahi.
Troy told us these playground projects always go smoothly because builders, contractors and locals are always super keen to get stuck in. With new slides, a new swing, new safety features and a whole lot of glorious colour, the new playground is an absolute hit with the students and a fantastic example of what can be done when a community comes together.
