What a season of rallying ahead!

MARCH, 2022

Hi, it’s Hayden Paddon here.

Thanks for the opportunity to tell you a bit about what’s happening this season as we compete in two rally championships plus a host of other events.

First up, we’ve recently confirmed that my co-driver John Kennard and I are getting back into the World Rally Championship later this year. Under the Hyundai New Zealand Rally banner, we’ll be running a Hyundai i20 N Rally2 car in selected events of the WRC2 category of the 2022 FIA World Rally Championship. This will allow us to get up to speed with the awesome i20 N Rally2 car as we compete at Rally Estonia, Rally Finland and back on home turf with Rally New Zealand scheduled for late September – I can’t wait! Then, we’ll be back with a full seven-event campaign the following year with the sole aim of winning the 2023 WRC2 Championship.

One of the coolest things about our WRC2 campaign is we’ll be running the car with our 100% New Zealand rally team of engineers, technicians and management travelling with me and John to the international events.

The same team will also run our proven, championship-winning Hyundai AP4 car for the New Zealand Rally Championship which heads to Otago in April, Whangarei in May and South Canterbury in June.

We also have some events in the Hyundai Kona EV rally car to confirm, so it’s going to be a busy and exciting year of competition.

As a valued Mitre 10 Trade customer, you’ll appreciate the importance of good partnerships – in life and in business.

The plans and goals I’ve been able to make this year would not be possible without several very important partnerships. Hyundai New Zealand is a significant partner in all our motorsport development projects undertaken at Paddon Rallysport in Cromwell and, over the past couple of years, Mitre 10 Trade has become a trusted and valued partner of myself and the team.

I really enjoy getting along to the various in-store events Mitre 10 Trade puts on for tradies and we’ve had a lot fun at track events at my home track, Highlands. I’ve also headed along to the NZ Certified Builders Conference and even hosted some awesome folk on exclusive two-day-one-night adventures that include rally car passenger rides, tours of the Paddon Rallysport workshop, head up onto Ben Nevis Station – one of the coolest places in the world – for other adrenalin filled adventure.

I also want to acknowledge Mitre 10 Trade’s support in fitting out our workshop with a massive array of brand-new power tools and equipment from Makita. Our guys are stoked to now have the best gear to do their job.

To finish up, a little bit about my most recent event. Over the weekend of 5-6 March, I was rapt to drive our Hyundai AP4 rally car, in all-out hillclimb spec, to victory in the Ben Nevis Station Golden 1200 Hillclimb on the highest public road in New Zealand, in the Nevis Valley above Bannockburn in Central Otago. I was even more rapt to take 6 seconds off my best time from two years ago! Huge credit to our team for producing a car which ran faultlessly all weekend and is one of the best cars I have ever driven.

We enjoyed hosting a limited number of partners and their guests at the event and, from what I saw, the Mitre 10 Trade guests had a great time. It really is a spectacle witnessing some of the fastest cars and drivers in what seems like middle earth.
