The new large format Mitre 10 store is tipped to open before the end of the year, with local civil contractors Siteworx Civil getting started on site within the next few weeks. The new store will be a whopping 5,500sqm in floor area and based in Derby Street.
Gisborne had been without a Mitre 10 since 2009 so the new owners opened a temporary store in Awapuni Rd in late 2018, focussed on outdoor living and heating, while planning was underway for the new store.
Owner operator Geoff Taylor says he’s excited to finally have construction underway and to be bringing such an extensive home improvement offering to Gisborne.
“We are really excited to be bringing such a comprehensive home improvement and trade business offering to Gisborne. With such a large footprint, we are going to be able to bring the community new product ranges, an extensive garden centre, along with amenities like a Columbus Café and playground for families as well as a large trade offer with drive thru, and 145 car parks. The larger footprint will also include showrooms for kitchens and bathrooms.
“Once complete, we will have a team of around 70, in a mix of full and part time roles. From our current temporary store, that will mean we will be employing around another 50 locals.
“The Gisborne region continues to see good growth and we believe the region has a very bright future. The feedback we have had to us bringing the Mitre 10 brand back to Gisborne has been very positive and we are looking forward to offering a high-quality shopping experience,” says Taylor.
Mitre 10 is a New Zealand co-operative with 83 locally owned and operated stores nationwide. Mitre 10 Gisborne will be the 84th store to join the cooperative and will be owned and operated by Geoff and Carolyn Taylor, and Brendan and Nicole Hall.
