Brand new Mitre 10 Beachlands opens Thursday

This weekend, the new Mitre 10 Beachlands store will be celebrating its official opening at Beachlands Junction with a bouncy castle, a community fundraiser sausage sizzle and special offers.

The brand new 1500sqm Mitre 10 store opens on 28 November and will bring a much more comprehensive and convenient home improvement offering to locals. It will have a 330sqm garden centre, kitchen and bathroom displays, Colour Centre, 53 carparks and has created more than a dozen new jobs.

Local businessman Mathew Huggins (left) has owned the Hammer Hardware store on Bell Road for seven years and is now advancing the business to a Mitre 10.

“The community has been hugely supportive of the store, and that’s been so important for us to take this leap. We’re looking forward to delivering a much fuller home improvement and trade offering to meet the needs of a growing Beachlands community,” says Huggins, Director of Mitre 10 Beachlands.

“It’s been a two to three-year business goal to advance the business from a Hammer Hardware to a Mitre 10 store. I’m really looking forward to the new challenge,” says Huggins.

Mathew will retain ownership of the current Hammer Hardware site, which will re-brand and become a dedicated location for trade, building and landscaping supplies, as well as equipment hire.

The expansion across the two sites has seen Huggins’ team grow by 15 team members.

“Beachlands has been and continues to grow, and it’s easy to see why. We live close to the sea, just a ferry ride to the city, it’s still got that rural feel but is still so close to the city,” says Huggins.

Like other Mitre 10 stores, there will be a community BBQ available for local charities or groups to use for fundraising. Over opening weekend, all the proceeds from the sausage sizzle will be going to local schools.

At 32, Huggins is now one of the youngest store owners in the Mitre 10 cooperative, opening his store in partnership with Mitre 10 MEGA Pukekohe owner Dean Littin (right).

As a retail cooperative, all 83 Mitre 10 and Mitre 10 MEGA stores around New Zealand are locally owned and operated, with some Members owning or having part share in more than one store.
