Construction on track for Mitre 10 MEGA Oamaru

Demolition is now complete on site and construction remains on track for the new Mitre 10 MEGA Oamaru store set to open in 2020.

The $18million investment will see a new 6,000sqm Mitre 10 MEGA store open on the Dee Street site. The new store will be double the size of the current Mitre 10 store and will boast an expanded offering for trade and retail customers.

Mitre 10 Oamaru owner-operator Simon Lye says that while it’s still early days, construction remains on track.

“We’ve had a great run on the demolition, with the team working really well to get that all completed. The site is now completely clear, and site works has just got underway in the last week or so – that’s a really exciting milestone to reach. Locals driving by will see that there are diggers on site working on that now. The site works will prepare the site for the foundations of the building to be laid, and that’s when we will get a real sense of the size and scale of the store.”

Lye is excited for the important role that the larger format store will play in the bright future of the local community.

“We are excited to be bringing a Mitre 10 MEGA to the Waitaki district, providing a more comprehensive home improvement offer to the community including extended and new product ranges and a fully serviced trade offer, as well as amenities like the Columbus Café and playground for local families,” says Mr Lye.

Mitre 10 has been servicing the local community for more than 25 years, moving twice over that time to larger premises to meet the needs of the growing Oamaru population.

“We will be investing $18 million to increase the footprint of the store to 6000sqm, making it well over double its current size. Once complete, we will need to employ a further 20 team members, in a mix of full and part time roles. This will see our team grow to more than 60 people.

“We are looking forward to being even more involved in the community, including bringing to Oamaru the famous Mitre 10 weekend sausage sizzle to support community fundraising” says Mr Lye.

Early works on the site in Dee Street has begun, and Mr Lye says “we’re tracking towards opening in early 2020, but that’s a long way out yet and we will have a better idea closer to the time.”

Mitre 10 is a co-operative of 83 locally owned and operated Mitre 10 and Mitre 10 MEGA stores across New Zealand.
