In July 2013, a 3 year old boy named Jai Ihaka fell from the money bars and Hart park in Henderson and suffered a traumatic brain injury. Jai was rushed to hospital, where his mother Nikki Ihaka was told he was unlikely to survive, and if he did that he would probably never walk or talk again. That day changed Jai's life and lives of his family ever since. It has been over 2 years since that day and Jai has defied the odds and has made remarkable progress. However, he still does, and will continue to face challenges for the rest of his life. Jai now has limited impulse control, it is very difficult to take him out in public or even to the park because he is constantly needing to be shadowed whilst he plays to ensure he isn't in any danger. This gives him little independence, which he needs to continue to progress in the hope of one day leading an independent lifestyle.
We (Mitre 10 MEGA New Lynn) were approached by one of Jai’s three caregivers to help pay for / discount a playhouse for him and his caregivers to use for therapy. After hearing Jai and Nicky’s story, we decided to get our team together and build Jai’s perfect and safe playhouse for himself and his therapists.
The project took 4 days and it incorporated Jai’s favourite colours (black and white) and his love for batman. Wise, a member from our paint department drew and painted it free hand. The playhouse was delivered to the family residence in Sunnyvale and Jai now uses it to play and do therapy in.
