About Mitre 10 MEGA Hornby
The new MEGA store has a long history in the Hornby area. Starting in the mid 1960's as Gassons hardware. In the mid 1970's the Hornby store became the first Mitre 10 in Christchurch, and was renamed "Hornby Mitre 10". After a period within the Hornby mall, the new owner Mr Tony Carter relocated to a 1,400m2 store at 23 Carmen Road in 1988.
The Smith family purchased the store in 1994. In 1999 Hornby Mitre 10 moved to a purpose built store at 350 Main South Road. Soon the store needed to expand again, this happened in 2004 when Hornby became the South Island's first Mitre 10 MEGA store.
Eight years later Hornby Mitre 10 is expanding yet again with a much wider building which is nearly double the size of the current store. The new Hornby Mitre 10 "MEGA" MEGA store is nearly 12,000m2 or 3 acres. Alone with thousands of new products, the new store has a huge garden centre, large drive thru, a Columbus Cafe and over 600 car parks.
