BLACKCAPS captain Daniel Vettori has been awarded the International Mitre 10 MVP award. Although Vettori’s recent series against Pakistan has been marred by injury, he was well ahead of Tim Southee who was in second place on the Mitre 10 MVP table. Vettori secured 280.20 points, Southee had 232.55 and Chris Martin was third with 151.95.
The International Mitre10 MVP covered the international series against Pakistan at home and the tour against India. MVP points are calculated from scoring runs, taking wickets and winning games.
This season Vettori has claimed 4 ODI wickets and 20 Test wickets. He was the leading wicket taker in the Test matches against India with 14 wickets. Regarding batting, he’s scored 205 Test runs, including a 110 against Pakistan in the recent series.
Vettori said it is humbling to be recognised as the Mitre 10 MVP winner for the 2010/11 season. “I announced earlier this season that this was going to be the last season as the BLACKCAPS captain and to be recognised as the Mitre 10 MVP winner is very special,” he said. “It has been a tough season for the BLACKCAPS but hopefully I can carry on and lead by example for the World Cup.”
Along with the title of Mitre 10 MVP winner, Vettori also won $2500 worth of Mitre 10 vouchers.
Although Vettori is pleased with the recognition, his focus is firmly on the World Cup. “The Mitre 10 MVP is very special. It gives players something to strive for. We are going to continue to strive to be the best we can be and coming into the World Cup we need as much support from fans, family, friends and sponsors as possible,” he said.
