The Hearty Red Tomato raises over $30,000 for heart research!

For the past five years Mitre 10 has been encouraging Kiwi gardeners to save a special spot in their plot for the Hearty Red Tomato plant. Each Spring every Hearty Red Tomato plant sold at Mitre 10 and Mitre 10 Mega stores has a 50c donation to the Heart Foundation’s work to reduce the risk of heart disease. disease and also some cancers. Cardiovascular disease (heart, stroke and blood vessel disease) is New Zealand’s number one killer of men and women - responsible for 40% of all deaths every year.
This year kiwi gardeners took home a huge amount of Hearty Red Tomato plants from Mitre 10 and Mitre 10 Mega stores - raising an incredible $31,000 dollars for the Heart Foundation charity.
Make sure you get your Hearty Red Tomato plants for your vege garden next spring. “Not only are these tomatoes a great way to boost your health - they are highly disease resistant and produce plenty of delicious, firm and juicy medium sized fruit,” says Mitre 10 Category Manager Julie Gregory. “They have long been popular with gardeners and growers - and are of course they are one of the most versatile ingredients in history!
“Like most tomato plants, they need regular watering and feeding and will grow to about one metre high – and it’s a good idea to let the tomatoes ripen on the plant before picking and store at room temperature,” she says.
