Ashburton’s Taylor Mackenzie has won top spot in Mitre 10’s Easy As for Kids national BIG Pumpkin Competition. Weighing in at an astounding 124kg, Taylor’s pumpkin was the clear winner at Saturday’s (April 6) local judging ceremony at Mitre 10 MEGA Ashburton.
After being announced as store winner, Taylor’s pumpkin was measured against the other Mitre 10 MEGA store winners and went on to win the national title of Mitre 10’s Easy As for Kids Biggest Pumpkin for 2013 which was a welcome surprise for the young gardener. The twelve year-old claimed the best spot in the family vegetable garden and ensured her pumpkin had enough water, sunlight and heat to morph into a giant vegetable.
Mitre 10 MEGA Ashburton Store Manager Kelvyn Savage was thrilled with Taylor’s win.
“We were absolutely shocked when we saw Taylor’s pumpkin because of the sheer size! " The Ashburton team are proud to have the national winner and can’t wait to see Taylor’s progress in the 2014 competition. “The Big Pumpkin Grow Off has been a fantastic concept to help young people get out in the garden and show off their gardening skills.”
Taylor’s pumpkin is now on display in store at Mitre 10 MEGA Ashburton.
The Mitre 10 MEGA BIG Pumpkin Contest is a national competition challenging children to grow a giant pumpkin. Launched in October 2012, children were asked to plant pumpkin seeds and care for them until pumpkin harvest time in April. Each Mitre 10 MEGA store throughout the country ran the competition with the heaviest pumpkin in each store in with a chance to take out the title of Grand National winner.
