Sometimes a bed can appear lost in a bedroom. To make it more of a focal point, and to give the bedroom a more luxurious look, we suggest that you create a generous headboard. This can be upholstered in a fabric that ties in with your bedroom colour scheme. Choose bold fabric for dramatic effect or a muted fabric to add serenity.

Here is one way that you could make your own padded headboard:

Materials Required

 • 2000 x 400mm sheet of MDF  •  Drill
 • 1200 x 2400mm sheet of MDF    • Screws
 • Skilsaw or bench saw    • Spirit Level
 • 2.8m x 1400mm wide fabric    • Pencil
 • 2.8m of Dacron    • Staple gun

Step 1: Make Battens

To make the batten fixings for your headboard, cut the 2000 x 400mm sheet of MDF in half lengthways with an electric saw on a 45 degree angle. This will give you two long pieces of timber with mitred edges.   Make the Batten Fixing for the Headboard

Step 2: Fix Dacron for Padding

Lay 1200 x 2400mm MDF on top of Dacron. Fold Dacron over the headboard and staple into place around the edges. Trim corners before stapling to reduce bulk.   Fix Dacron to your Headboard

Step 3: Attach Fabric

Place fabric on ground, smoothing out wrinkles, and lay padded headboard on top. Fold fabric over headboard and staple through Dacron, stretching fabric to keep it smooth.   Attach Fabric to Cover Dacron

Step 4: Fix Batten to Headboard

Screw one half of the batten fixing to the centre back of the headboard so that the mitred edge faces towards the bottom of the headboard. Make sure the batten is straight.   Fix Batten to Headboard

Step 5: Fix Batten to Wall and Mount Headboard

Screw the other half of the batten fixing to the wall so that its mitred edge faces upwards. Use a spirit level to ensure the batten is straight. Mount the headboard on the batten fixing so that the two mitred edges lock into place.
