What You'll Need
Futon mattress |
4 pieces of 150mm x 50mm pine for frame. (Lengths cut to match the size of the futon mattress) |
4 x 75mm industrial castors with brakes |
1 piece of 100 x 50mm pine for support (cut to the length of the frame, plus at least 1m extra to make four corner support blocks) |
20 slats cut from 12mm-ply to fit width of frame |
A pack of 3-inch wood screws and cordless drill |
Woodworking adhesive |
Sandpaper |
Step 1
Cut four lengths of wood (150 x 50mm pine) to make the futon slat-bed frame. Pre-drill the ends of the longer, side pieces. Screw on the two bed ends to make basic frame. Use sandpaper to smoothe off edges. |
Step 2
Measure the centre points of the head and foot of the bed and mark with a pencil. Screw in the pre-cut length of pine (100 x 50mm) so it`s flush with the top of the frame. This provides additional support for the slats. |
Step 3
Mark 20 equal spaces along the lengths of the frame and attach slats, at these points, with screws. Again, use sandpaper to smooth any raw edges on the slats. |
Step 4
Turn the bed upside down and cut four triangular wooden blocks to fit snugly into the corners. Glue and screw a block into each corner of the frame, making sure they are straight and sitting flush with the bottom. |
Step 5
Screw a castor on to each block; turn bed over. |
Step 6
Sand and stain/polyurethane timber as required.
Step 7
Once complete, place mattress on top.
