Make A Funky Butcher`s Block

A few seasons ago, Handy Andy made a butcher`s block on one of our Changing Rooms episodes. It`s proved a popular addition to the kitchen so we`ve decided to feature the butcher block here and give you some tips on how you can make it yourself.

In the picture shown at the right, the butcher`s block has been painted with Dulux Wash & Wear 101 gloss acrylic `Sardinia` (pale blue.)

What You`ll Need:

8 x 675mm-long 40mm x 90mm dressed pine timber (for legs)
2 pieces 755mm-long 40mm x 90mm dressed pine timber (for rails)
2 pieces 510mm-long 40mm x 90mm dressed pine timber (for rails)
4 pieces 270mm-long 40mm x 90mm dressed pine timber (for braces)
352 x 120mm-long pieces 40mm x 40mm dressed pine timber (for top)
4 pieces 100mm-long 40mm x 40mm dressed pine timber (for stays)
1 piece 600mm x 800mm 18mm-thick MDF (for shelf)
4 trolley wheels

Step 1: Make the legs

To make the legs drill six holes through one leg piece. Glue and screw into a second piece. Repeat three times. To make braces, mitre a 45° angle on each end of the four 270mm blocks.

Step 2: Set up rails and legs in position

Set up rails and legs in position upside down. Mark 4mm in from outside edge of each leg. Drill holes at a 45° angle through rails and screw into legs. Slot braces into corners and screw through into rails to secure.

Step 3: Cut a 45mm by 25mm notch in each corner of MDF board shelf

Cut a 45mm by 25mm notch in each corner of MDF board shelf. Slot into position 120mm up from leg ends and screw through bottom of shelf at a 45° angle into legs to secure. Screw a trolley wheel on the end of each leg. Paint frame as desired.

Step 4: Spread Selleys Aquadhere on sides

Spread Selleys Aquadhere on sides of 22 of the 120mm-long blocks and press together into a row. Working quickly, continue to glue and place 15 more rows of blocks to create a top 930mm by 680mm.

Step 5: Brace up

Brace up with four planks padded with news-paper and cramp. Place on a hard, flat surface and hammer blocks down evenly. Turn right-side up. Tighten clamps. Mix a little sawdust with wood glue. Rub into gaps between blocks to fill. Leave to dry. Remove clamps. Sand top with a belt sander and sand or router edges to a gentle curve. Place upside down on a flat surface. Position legs centrally on top. Position the four stay blocks within the frame and screw through into bottom of block. Turn frame right-side up. Slot top into place.

Now that your butcher`s block is complete, you need to select a finish for it. Briwax Danish Oil is one option. Apply 2 or 3 it according to the manufacturers instructions. You`d need 2 or 3 coats. Allow it to dry for at least 24 hours before using it. Briwax 2000 (Toluene free) is another option. These products are available from your local Mitre 10 store.
