 Unity

A lovely blend of unity and contrast. The match of colour and style in the buildings pulls the whole scene together. There is further harmony in the way the lawn echoes the hill behind, yet there is contrast in the square shape of the lawn and the rounded hill. The proportions of hard materials and soft grass and gardens relate perfectly.

Proportions

The proportions of this space are enhanced by the dividing path. The line of the path draws you towards the steps. The vertical lines of the handrail balances the vertical lines of the pergola.

 Repetition

A first glance this seems a random mix of old and new buildings with all sorts of colours and materials. Look closer and you can see unity provided by the repetition of rectangular panels. The scene is further unified by the way the green paint picks up the colour of the pohutukawa foliage and the red door will match pohutukawa flowers.

 Harmony

The harmony in this pretty garden comes from repeating the colours and materials used on the house, the fence and the planting. Balance comes from the symmetrical layout and also the contrast of the rounded roses and the vertical lines of the fence and house.

 Balance

Clever use of re-cycled corrugated iron makes a perfect fence for this old cottage. The vertical lines of the fence balance the horizontal lines of the weatherboards. The repeated cut-out openings add more vertical pattern and the shadows emphasis the horizontal lines. The whole scene is unified by keeping to one colour.

 Lines

The zigzag line of the seat echoes the lines of the paving and is a modern solution to a tricky triangular site.

 Focal Points

The decking has been laid in different directions to add interesting lines and improve the proportions of the long thin space. The water pot acts as a focal point at the top of the rise.

 Paths

The gently curved line of the path invites the viewer into this part of the garden. The hint of mystery, “Where does it lead?” adds to the invitation.

 Contrasting

Concrete pavers and decking are natural companions in this garden, effectively breaking up the garden into well-proportioned spaces and indicating different functions or different degrees of formality. The gravel adds contrasting softer texture.

 Textures

There is unity in the way the colours of stone and sand match the colours of timber and tree bark. The vertical lines balance the low horizontals of the paving and steps. Contrasting foliage colour and varied textures completes a harmonious and satisfying scene. Another curved line invites you to explore further.
