From time to time, insect pests or diseases can be a problem. Following is a list of common pest and diseases that affect citrus and how to remedy the problem. Problem: Iron or Magnesium Deficiency Symptoms Yellow leaves. Leaf veins remain green or older leaves yellow from the outer edge. Problem Iron or magnesium deficiency. Remedy Feed with a specially blended Citrus fertiliser. Apply around the drip line, water thoroughly. For citrus growing in containers feed with a controlled release fertiliser such as Osmocote. Problem: Aphids Symptoms Clusters of small black or green insects. Distorted new growth. Problem Aphids Remedy Spray with Target or Confidor. Tansy or marigolds planted underneath may help deter aphids. Problem: Mealy Bug Symptoms Small white fluffy insects covered in a mealy substance. Mealy bug cluster on leaf axils and stems. Problem Mealy Bug Remedy Spray with Conqueror Oil mixed with Confidor. Problem: Scale Insect Symptoms Small brown scale-like insects. Poor growth, pale dehydrated leaves. Problem Scale insect Remedy Spray with Conqueror Oil mixed with Confidor. Problem: Honey Dew excreted by Aphids, Mealy bug and Scale Insect Symptoms Black sooty mould on leaves. Problem Honey-dew excreted by aphids, mealy bug and scale insect. Remedy Spray with Mavrik or Confidor mixed with Conqueror Oil. Once the insects are controlled the sooty mould will disappear. Problem: Lemon Tree Borer Symptoms Poor growth, branches die. Holes in stems with "sawdust". Problem Lemon tree borer. Remedy This is very difficult to control. Spray with No Borer or use a specialised borer killer. Prune back to clean wood and burn infected parts. Paint any cut branches with a water-based paint or Bacseal pruning paste. Problem: Verrucosis Symptoms Brown scabs or wart-like bumps on the fruit and foliage. Problem Verrucosis Remedy Spray with Copper Oxychloride or Champ DP.
