Garden Edging Plants

Introduction
Printable Version

A good edging around a garden or section of garden can often complete a picture

Edging helps to define and outline various areas be they paths, lawn edges or driveways. Some areas demand it; others can make do without it.

For the purposes of this article we will be discussing plants used as edging rather than the plastic or wired timber garden edging.

The choice of edging plant can often be a matter of personal preference or trend, and is also dictated by ‘environmental’ factors such as slope, situation or climate.

To some people a good edging plant must be full of flowers – scented would be a bonus - but to others the form alone will just as readily fit the bill. Some like them short, squat and under control, while others prefer the random ‘nature put me here’ look. Whatever takes your fancy will do – for you. The most common factor in edging is the use of multiple plants of one type around each section of garden.

You can choose from annuals for that burst of colour and immediacy, or use perennials or shrubs. The use of seasonal plants gives you great options for variety and change, but these plants need regular changing and maintenance, which can deter some people. Keep an open mind while you’re making your choice as the options are virtually endless.

In recent years mondo grass has been combined with Buxus hedging for a formal look. Nepeta or catmint is another favourite – the most common variety sports lovely purple flowers and is often used underneath taller plants such as rose to hide their unsightly nether regions.

Lavender is another that is often used – particularly stunning along long driveways – just remember it can be visited by bees so bear this in mind.

Heuchera complement plants of differing forms. Grasses make stunning edging plants, swaying gently in any breeze. Foliage of varying colours also makes great edging plants – for example Lambs ears or Stachys – these can be great in darker less sunny spots to lighten the area with its soft silver leaves.

Whatever edging plant you choose, consider the amount of time you want to spend ‘maintaining’ your edges and the climate that you are in before you make your purchases.
