September is the perfect time to think about staining your deck, fences, pergolas and outdoor furniture in time for the long Summer days ahead.

At Mitre 10 we have the best exterior wood care range available with the Wattyl Forestwood family of stain products.

Type of Timber

It is important to know the type of wood you have so that you use the appropriate product. Some woods are particularly soft and porous such as cedar and pine, whereas others like kwila or rimu are denser, so they may require more than one coat of stain to achieve an even coverage. Don’t forget that due to the transparency of stains and oils, the final outcome will be influenced by the natural colour of the timber.

Preparation

One of the first considerations should be preparation of the outdoor area or furniture. Timberclean will remove dirt and grease and fight mould and mildew at the same time, while Wattyl Combat will reduce mould growth, warping and cracking. Timber that has been previously coated or sealed must be sanded or stripped back to bare timber prior to applying a stain.

Wattyl Forestwood Traditional Oil Stain

Is a rich penetrating oil stain that adds colour and allows the grain to show through. It is best utilised on rough sawn and smooth weathered timbers. It dries to a low sheen and is available in a beautiful range of warm earthy colours.

Wattyl Forestwood Aquatech

Is a water-reduced oil stain and is also suited for exterior surfaces such as the rough sawn and weathered smooth timbers of weatherboards, beams, pergolas, gates and windows. An extensive range of standard and tinted Aquatech colours are available

Wattyl Forestwood Decking Stain

Is a solvent-based stain that gives a matt oiled finish and is suitable for most decking and garden timbers, including durable softwoods and close grain hardwoods. It is available in a range of standard timber colours.

Application

Before you begin, ensure that your timber is dry and clean from
dirt, oil and grease. To be effective it has to penetrate the timber, so too much will only mean that it remains on the surface. The Wattyl Forestwood range of exterior stains are guaranteed to have something to suit your needs, while offering you the best quality product to create the best quality results.
