Our Kwila BBQ table needs to be restained, but we have found that the old stain was washed off by rain over time, staining the concrete below.
I heard there was a way that you could help the stain be better absorbed into the wood. Any ideas?
Response from Mitre 10: We have recently created Tips on Staining for the upcoming season;
TIPS ON STAINING
If your timber is uncoated remove any oil, dirt, mildew or mould spores with timber cleaning products such as Cabots Kleenwood (sku 359219) or Wattyl Timberclean (sku 361076).
Timber that has been previously coated or sealed (e.g. paint, clear finishes) must be sanded or stripped back to bare timber prior to applying stain.
If you want to change the colour of your outdoor furniture or deck you need to select a stain such as Forestwood Decking Stain.
If you want to highlight the natural colour and characteristics of your timber then oil is what you are looking for such as Cabots Decking & Furniture Oil.
Stir product thoroughly with a flat stirrer.
Remember that it's easy to go overboard and apply excess stain or oil. To be effective it has to penetrate the timber, so too much will only mean that it remains on the surface.
Make sure that you prepare yourself with a pair of long latex gloves and a good quality brush and don't forget to read all the instructions on the can carefully!
The main reason for leaking and poor absorption is due to too excessive layers being applied. The stain/oil needs to penetrate the timber so it better to apply a few thin layers rather than one thick layer.
